Jason A. Anderson

Mr. Anderson began writing extended-length fiction by hand while still in grade school.  Throughout Jr. High and High School, he worked hard to polish his wordcraft, which is when he penned the original version of "Starriders 1: Dragon Fire".  Following school, he started Chalice Publications, which he used to publish the art and literature magazine "Beyond...and then some", and later on the gaming magazine "Masters of Role Playing".  In 2002, Chalice Publications published a much different version of Starriders 1, after leaving the magazine publishing business.  He has since focused his efforts on the SoulChaser Universe, the first of which will be released in early 2011 by National Writers Press.  It is titled "SoulChaser: Good Blood...Bad Blood" and is the first in a supernatural/urban fantasy trilogy.  His non-writing interests include off-roading, scuba diving, loud music, fast cars and riding motorcycles.  Mr. Anderson lives in Utah.

Robert J Defendi

Robert J Defendi has worked on many projects.  We was one of the writers for Savage Seas for the game  Exalted.  He's done a good bit of work for Spycraft, Shadowforce Archer and the Stargate SG-1 roleplaying game.  He's also done fiction for Writers of the Future and When Darkness Comes, as well as Spacemaster (and the game's current incarnation.)

Robert J Defendi was born in Dubuque, IA to parents who, frankly, should have known better.  After a bleak, early period, punctuated by too much bad science fiction produced by Walt Disney, he began to read such greats as Tolkien, Niven, Clark, Asimov and Clavell.  He's been influenced by dozens of writers, from Tom Clancy to Barbara Hambly.  He studies bad fiction as well as good in every medium but poetry (with which he is abysmally bad).  He feels that writing is a constant process, continuing through every aspect of one's life, and that the time spent at the keyboard is only a small part of the process.

Orson Scott Card has said THE PRINCESS AND THE HOUND is "powerful, surprising, moving, deep" and is "a classic."

Mette is also a competitive triathlete and survived (barely!) a PhD program in Germanic Languages and Literatures at Princeton University (1995).  She has five children and lives in Layton, Utah.  For fun, she tries out new vegan recipes, crochets, draws, and plays the piano badly.  She loves Amish quilts, black and white illustration, chocolate, and Jane Austen everything.  Her website is www.metteivieharrison.com.  She is also available for novel manuscript critiques.**≈

Karen took the gift of words her dad gave her and ran with it. Since then, she's written two novels and reams of poetry. Her head is fairly popping with ideas, so she plans to write until she's ninety-four or maybe even a hundred and four.

D. Michael Martindale

E. Modesitt, Jr.

L. E. Modesitt, Jr., is the author of more than 50 novels – primarily science fiction and fantasy, a number of short stories, and numerous technical and economic articles.  His novels have sold millions of copies in the U.S. and world-wide, and have been translated into German, Polish, Dutch, Czech, Russian, Bulgarian, French, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew, and Swedish.  Mr. Modesitt was born in 1943 in Denver, Colorado, and later graduated from Williams College under the delusion that poetry was considered respectable and that fantasy and science fiction were not, a mistake he now attributes to youthful enthusiasm.

He has been a delivery boy;  a lifeguard;  an unpaid radio disc jockey;  a U.S. Navy pilot; a market research analyst; a real estate agent; director of research for a political campaign;  legislative assistant and staff director for U.S. Congressmen;  Director of Legislation and Congressional Relations for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency;  a consultant on environmental, regulatory, and communications issues;  a college lecturer and writer in residence; and unpaid treasurer of a civic music arts association.

Shortly after his tours as a Navy amphibious officer and then as a pilot, he returned to Denver as a market research analyst and economist, which experiences generated the idea for his first published story – “The Great American Economy” – printed in ANALOG in 1973.  He then pursued a career in another kind of fantasy by becoming the Legislative Assistant for Congressman Bill Armstrong in Washington, D.C., and later staff director for Congressman Ken Kramer. During his years in Washington, he attempted to regain some hold on reality by writing increasingly more science fiction.  Not totally by coincidence, his first novel was published while he was serving as the head of Legislation and Congressional Relations at the U.S. EPA during the Reagan-Burford controversies. There he was responsible for coordinating EPA’s response to Congressional inquiries and hearings and for accepting midnight telephone calls from various individuals terming themselves journalists.  This experience led to the writing of The Green Progression, a book almost totally factual and yet termed more fantastic than any of his fantasy novels.  Such public and critical action confirmed his fundamental belief in the reality of science fiction and fantasy.

Along the way, Mr. Modesitt has weathered eight children, a fondness for three-piece suits [which has deteriorated into a love of vests], a brown Labrador, a white cockapoo, an energetic Shih-tzu, two scheming dachshunds, a capricious spaniel, a crazy Saluki-Aussie, and various assorted pet rodents.  Finally, in 1989, to escape nearly twenty years of occupational captivity in Washington, D.C., he moved to New Hampshire.  There he married a lyric soprano, and he and his wife Carol moved to Cedar City, Utah, in 1993, where she directs the voice and opera program at Southern Utah University and he continues to create and manage chaos.

After serving an LDS mission in the savage and uncivilized jungles of Southern California (the Mickey Mouse Mission), Berin attended BYU where he received a bachelors and a masters degree in music performance and pedagogy before being chased out. He returned to the frozen north to teach saxophone and clarinet lessons and even a Music Depreciation course at the University of Alaska. In 2005, Berin and his wife, Vicky, bundled up their five kids and force-marched them to Orem, Utah. Berin currently performs with several jazz groups and The Mundy Mourning Blues Band in addition to teaching music lessons in his home and at Utah Valley University. He enjoys taking long walks off short piers, not asking for directions, and putting his foot in his mouth. His first book, The Dragon War Relic, came out in November of 2009 from Bonneville Books and is a sci-fi/fantasy/action/comedy. For more information, visit www.DragonWarRelic.com.

Brad R. Torgersen -- Bio

Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Brad started dreaming of being a professional fiction writer while doing unpaid work on a local community radio science fiction serial called Searcher & Stallion.  It was while working on Searcher & Stallion that Brad also met the woman who would become his biggest fan -- and his wife -- and together they moved to the Puget Sound of Washington State in 1993.

For the next 14 years Brad toiled at various occupations ranging from front desk clerk at a motel to computer support at a well-known Seattle hospital -- including enlistment in the United States Army Reserve in the wake of September 11, 2001.  Along the way Brad nursed his writing habit, accruing a significant pile of rejection slips, such that he stopped doing short fiction altogether in 1999 and made several abortive attempts at doing novels before, in 2005, he almost quit in frustration.

Brad's wife Annie wouldn't let him give up on his dream, however, so with a little spousal butt-kicking on her part he began attending local writing workshops and conventions such as NorwesCon, in an attempt to revive his production.

In 2007 Brad submitted his first story to Writers of the Future, garnering four Honorable Mentions and a Finalist placement before finally winning 3rd Place for the 3rd Quarter of 2009 -- his first professional success.

Brad's back in Utah, still doing computer work in healthcare and enjoying his promotion to Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve.  He's plugging into the local SF&F writing community and attending conventions such as CONduit.  He thinks Writers of the Future is an excellent opportunity for aspirant science fiction and fantasy writers, and hopes his win is just the first step in a productive professional fiction career.

Dan Willis

Dan always had an affinity for stories.ت Growing up in Maryland in the late 70s, he fell in love with reading at an early age, devouring books as fast as he could get them.ت When his fourth grade teacher challenged his class to write a short story for Halloween, Danصs was pages rather than paragraphs.تت After reading it aloud in class, Dan discovered that many of the student stories read the following day had elements of his story incorporated in them.ت Almost from that moment, Dan was a born storyteller.

Not knowing how, exactly, to become a writer, Dan did the usual things, went to college, got married, designed games, and dreamed.ت While perfecting his craft as a writer, Dan became a computer programmer, technical writer, game designer, software tester, web designer, and even insurance salesman.ت Eventually, after years of hard work and effort, Danصs work caught the attention of Wizardصs of the Coast, who signed him immediately to work on their new YA imprint; DragonLance: The New Adventures.ت Dan produced three books for the YA line, including one of the series best-sellers.ت Recently his book The Survivors was released under Wizardصs original DragonLance brand.ت

These days Dan lives in the west, right at the mouth of a magnificent canyon where the wind always blows.ت He has a lovely wife, four children, and is hard at work on his next book - an original Steampunk novel.
